Today you will go birdwatching: seagulls, frigate birds, and the nowadays very rare black stern. This last bird used to play a main role in Easter Island's traditions: each year, men swam to the Motu Nui Island, and tried to bring back one of its eggs, symbol of the creation of the human gender.

Day 6: Hanga Roa

In the morning, along with some local specialists, you will cook the famous Curanto in the traditional way using the “Ahi ma’a”, the traditional Tahitian oven. This oven is in fact, a simple pit dug in the ground layered with wood. Porous volcanic stones are placed over the wood layer. Once the wood has been consumed by the fire, the stones are transformed into an efficient heat source. Once the adequate temperature has been reached, the stones are covered with banana leaves. You will then enjoy the food you have prepared.
Now that you know how the center of the world looks like, you will have to find its place. You will spend this half day snorkeling and diving to make sure the center of the world is not under the sea. You will be able to spot 144 different species of sea grass, 111 different species of fish, and if you are lucky, even some turtles. The clue that you will find tells you the center of the world is on land.
