Day 2: Puerto Tranquilo - Marble Chapels - Bahía Exploradores - San Valentin Icefields - Puerto Tranquilo
In the morning, you will board on a small boat to get to the site of the Marble Chapel, a unique geological formation featuring a group of caverns, tunnels, and pillars created in monoliths of marble and formed by waves over the last 6,000 years or so. You will discover hundreds of different forms, shaped according to the water's inspiration: a ring, a cave, a column, a window... An islet received the title of "cathedral": it rests on marble columns looking very similar to the ones constructed by men. The boat brushes against the smooth and flaking marble and the rough limestone which actually chiseled there some sort of crests. The smooth swirling blues of the cavern walls are a reflectin of the lake's azure waters which change in intensity and hue, depending on water levels and time of year. The spectacle encourages daydreaming but it is time to go back because Bahía Exploradores is waiting for you. You can stop at the guard's hut, and walk for 20-25 min to get to a mirador which offers an exceptional view on Monte San Valentin, the highest mountain in Patagonia (4,058 m). Do not hesitate to contact us for a walk among the glaciers.
Return to Puerto Tranquillo.
Note: it is possible to replace the boat tour by a kayak tour, very easy and absolutely fantastic. Also know that the navigation is subject to change due to weather conditions.
